Reflexology is a method for inducing deep relaxation and activating the healing powers of the body by applying pressure to reflexes on the feet or hands. These reflexes correspond to different organs glands and structures of the body.

How reflexology works

Following illness, injury or stress, energy pathways called meridians become blocked .This prevents the body from functioning as it should. Reflexology unblocks these pathways by applying pressure to points on the feet or hands, which in turn cleanses the body and improves circulation, thus inducing deep relaxation.

Benefits – how reflexology can help you.

By working on the feet, reflexology works holistically. Consequently each treatment is unique to each person, as are the benefits of each session .It is suitable for people of all ages and can improve circulation, cleanse the body of toxins, revitalise energy and balance the whole system. It can also be used as a preventative intervention.

Reflexology can support and assist anyone suffering from the following conditions:
• stress and anxiety
• back pain or other skeletal issues
• digestive problems such as IBS or constipation
• breathing problems
• hormonal problems such as PMS or menopause
• depression or mental health issues
• high blood pressure
• pain relief
• sleep disorders
• poor circulation

Reflexology can also be of particular help for post operative recovery and during and after pregnancy.

Vertical Reflex Therapy

VRT can be incorporated into the start and finish of a general reflexology treatment.  When a person is standing for a VRT treatment it is the top (dorsum) of the foot which is worked , and not, as in conventional reflexology, the sole (plantar).  It is suitable for all conditions and can be of particular help for the elderly and wheelchair users. VRT can often show dramatic improvements within minutes of treatment to many orthopaedic problems, as well as most other conditions.

What happens at my first treatment?

Your treatment will be explained in more detail and a medical history taken. Treatment takes approximately 1 hour and is usually received lying down.

How might I feel after a treatment?

Commonly people report feeling deeply relaxed, sleepy, or conversely energised yet relaxed. You will be encouraged to drink roughly 2 litres of water after treatment. This avoids the possibility of having a headache or flu-like symptoms as toxins leave your body.

How many treatments will I need?

This very much depends on how quickly you want a desired outcome, but usually I recommend 3 or 4 over a month until some improvement is felt, then, in consultation with you, fortnightly or monthly if required.

Are there any conditions which are not suitable for treatment?

The Association of Reflexologists recommends to avoid reflexology with severe cases of cellulitis, DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) and with contagious or notifiable diseases such as measles or scarlet fever, or with a history of unstable pregnancies. If you are unsure or if you have any questions please CONTACT me.

Is it safe to have reflexology during pregnancy?

Whilst there are risks throughout pregnancy, in the first 3 months there is a higher risk of miscarriage. However, there is no evidence to show that reflexology can bring on a miscarriage, and most reflexologists consider it effective in assisting women who have a history of miscarriage. Women in early pregnancy who have received reflexology from me have reported feeling more relaxed and having a less anxious and more positive attitude.

Does receiving reflexology spread cancer?

There is no evidence showing that reflexology encourages metastases. I have 4 years experience giving reflexology in a local centre for cancer sufferers and their families , and have also attended courses for reflexology with cancer.

Is reflexology suitable for the terminally ill?

Reflexology is very beneficial for pain relief, relaxation and providing a sense of space giving time to reflect and talk  freely to someone who is not family or wearing a white coat.

Can babies or children receive reflexology?

The young and very young are open and receptive to this method of treatment, and usually a 15-30 minute session suffices. It is recommended by the Association of Reflexologists to obtain written consent to treat minors. Those with parental responsibility can sign this, either parent if they are married. An unmarried father will be required to obtain written consent from the mother or the court.

Can I recover the cost of treatments through my health insurance?

Some insurers will cover the cost of your treatment but please check  with your insurer before beginning a course of treatment. A receipt will be provided if requested.
